In line with Applus IDIADA's continuous aim of extending the scope of engineering support offered to its clients, we installed a dedicated automotive crosswind simulator facility, which has been operational since April 2010.
Designed for vehicle development and validation programmes, the facility enables manufacturers and engineering teams to evaluate vehicle behaviour under controlled crosswind conditions, supporting the assessment of stability, handling performance and driver confidence. As part of our comprehensive automotive proving ground services, the facility provides a repeatable environment for crosswind testing and vehicle dynamics development.
The wind generators have been located at one of IDIADA's dynamic platforms, enabling the effect of an aggressive crosswind on vehicle stability to be assessed, either subjectively or objectively. Most importantly, the crosswind generators provide customers with a real-world opportunity to assess their vehicles according to ISO 12021-1 requirements, or similar procedures, and gain final reassurance of conformity.
The facility can be used by our proving ground clients as well as by our vehicle dynamics engineers.
Applus IDIADA's Vehicle Dynamics department, which has extensive expertise in handling measurements and test analysis, uses this facility to benchmark and develop vehicle performance. Using state-of-the-art instrumentation and proprietary analysis software (DynAsoft), complete comparisons between different vehicles or setups can be performed, enabling comprehensive analysis of vehicle handling performance as a function of vehicle speed, load, driver inputs and other test variables.
As always, to support vehicle chassis engineering, IDIADA offers additional evaluation tools, including full vehicle simulation capabilities and chassis characterisation methods such as the KnC suspension test rig.
