    90% of the equipment found in a new vehicle is electronic and electronics now represent more than 30% of the total cost of a passenger car. Most vehicles are equipped with at least 4 engine control units (ECUs), but in some cases this figure can reach 50. Communications require at least 1 CAN bus, but there can be up to 5 CAN buses plus LIN, MOST and even FlexRay buses. The number of wires and connectors multiplies as the number of ECUs and communications increase. New issues arise in the development ofelectric vehicles and Intelligent Transport Systems (the basis of this proposal). These co-operative systems (intelligent transport systems or ITSs) will improve road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and more environmentally-friendly driving. The European Commission is interested in the implementation of these technologies on a massive scale.

    Applus+ IDIADA is developing a new integrated concept based on a controlled environment such as that of a proving ground intelligently managed using ITS technologies for vehicle detection and monitoring. And we are also working ont he creation of a universal platform for the development of new, innovative products in collaboration with other companies engaged in ICT technologies as a key step in the scalability of these technologies and their future massive introduction / implementation in cities and on motorways. This platform will be used as a physical development tool by traffic-management agencies, vehicle manufacturers and suppliers of vehicular wireless-communication systems.
